The Diocese of Atlanta was established in 1956 from territory taken from the Diocese of Savannah and was elevated to an archdiocese in 1962. Its mother church is the Cathedral of Christ the King in the Buckhead district, a French Gothic building whose parish was founded in 1936. The archdiocese covers 69 counties in northern Georgia.
