The Diocese of Galveston was established in 1847 as the first Catholic diocese in Texas, was renamed the Diocese of Galveston-Houston in 1959 as Houston became an episcopal city, and was elevated to an archdiocese in 2004. It maintains two cathedrals: St. Mary Cathedral Basilica in Galveston, dedicated in 1848, and the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Houston, dedicated in 2008. The archdiocese serves Catholic parishes across ten counties in southeast Texas.
