The Archdiocese of Seattle traces its origins to the Diocese of Nesqually, erected in 1850; its see moved to Seattle in 1907 and it was elevated to a metropolitan archdiocese in 1951. Its mother church is St. James Cathedral, dedicated in 1907 on Seattle's First Hill. The archdiocese covers 23 counties across western Washington.
