About

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known as the Baltimore Basilica, was completed in 1821 as the first Roman Catholic cathedral built in the United States. Designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, architect of the U.S. Capitol, it is considered a masterwork of American Neoclassical architecture. It now serves as a co-cathedral of the Archdiocese of Baltimore and is a designated National Historic Landmark.
