The Basílica de Santa María de Guadalupe in the north of Mexico City holds the tilma associated with the apparitions reported by Juan Diego in 1531, and receives more pilgrims than any other Catholic shrine in the Americas. The present basilica opened in 1976 beside the older one, which had settled unevenly on the old lake bed.
