The Basilica of Saint Mary was the first church in the United States elevated to the rank of basilica, designated by Pope Pius XI in 1926. Designed by Emmanuel Masqueray in the Beaux-Arts style, its cornerstone was laid in 1908 and it was dedicated in 1915, later becoming co-cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis in 1966. The basilica is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and remains an active downtown Minneapolis parish.
