The Concord Baptist Church of Christ was founded in 1847 by abolitionists and grew into one of Brooklyn's largest African American congregations. Under Rev. Gardner C. Taylor, who led the church from 1947 to 1990 and co-founded the Progressive National Baptist Convention in 1961, membership grew as large as 10,000, making it one of the largest Baptist congregations in the United States. The church operates affiliated ministries including a credit union, a nursing home, and a school.
