About

First African Baptist Church, organized in 1773, is among the oldest Black Baptist congregations in North America, tracing its roots to a congregation gathered by George Liele on a Savannah-area plantation. Its current sanctuary, completed largely through the labor of its enslaved and free Black members, dates to 1859. The church remains an active congregation in downtown Savannah.
