Franciscan University of Steubenville is a Catholic university in eastern Ohio founded in 1946 as the College of Steubenville by Franciscan friars of the Third Order Regular (TOR), Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. It opened with 258 students, most of them World War II veterans, and moved to its present hilltop campus beginning in 1961. The university is widely known for its role in the Catholic charismatic renewal and for a curriculum integrating the liberal arts with Catholic theology.
