The Jama Masjid of Shahjahanabad was built for the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and finished in 1656. It holds about twenty five thousand worshippers in its courtyard and is the principal congregational mosque of Delhi. The office of Shahi Imam has passed through descendants of the first imam appointed by Shah Jahan in 1656, and the mosque remains a focal point of Muslim public life in the city.
