Kopan Monastery sits on a hill north of Kathmandu and belongs to the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Founded in 1969 by Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche, it houses several hundred monks and runs residential courses in Buddhist study and meditation that are open to visitors from abroad.
