The Meenakshi temple at Madurai is dedicated to Meenakshi, a form of Parvati, and to Sundareswarar, a form of Shiva, and the goddess rather than her consort holds the senior place. The earliest masonry belongs to the Pandya period around 1200, and most of what stands was rebuilt from the fourteenth century onward. Fourteen gopurams rise over the enclosure, the southern one to about 52 metres. The fifteen day Meenakshi Tirukalyanam in Chithirai is its largest festival.
