The Moscow Cathedral Mosque near the Olympic stadium replaced a mosque of 1904 that stood on the same ground. The new building opened in 2015, holds about ten thousand worshippers and is the main congregational mosque of the city, serving a Muslim population drawn from the Volga Tatars, the north Caucasus and central Asia. The Russian Council of Muftis took the decisions on its rebuilding.
