About

Saint Meinrad Archabbey is a Benedictine monastery in southern Indiana founded in 1854 by monks from Einsiedeln Abbey in Switzerland, both to serve German-speaking Catholic settlers and to provide a refuge should the Swiss government suppress their motherhouse. It is one of only two archabbeys in the United States and operates Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology, a graduate seminary that forms priests and lay ministers for dioceses and religious communities nationwide. Its monks also serve in parish ministry and chaplaincy.
