Salem Baptist Church of Chicago was founded in 1985 with 193 members under Rev. James T. Meeks and grew into one of the largest congregations in Chicago, with more than 9,000 members and ten ministries. The church has been a prominent civic voice on Chicago's South Side, engaged in education, anti-violence, and community-development initiatives. It describes its mission as "restoring hope by connecting people to God and each other."
