About

The Sisters of Charity of New York trace their origin to three sisters sent from Mother Elizabeth Ann Seton's Emmitsburg community in 1817 to establish an orphanage in New York City. In 1846 the New York sisters separated from Emmitsburg to become an independent congregation under the Archbishop of New York, founding schools, orphanages, and hospitals across the city. The congregation is headquartered at the Sisters of Charity Center on the campus of the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the Bronx.
