Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, organized in 1873 as the First Colored Baptist Church of Birmingham, became a major organizing hub of the civil rights movement in Birmingham, Alabama. On September 15, 1963, a Ku Klux Klan bombing of the church killed four young girls, an event that galvanized national support for civil rights legislation. The church is a National Historic Landmark and remains an active congregation.
