The Swedenborgian Church of North America is a Christian denomination founded in 1817 that draws its theology from the Bible as interpreted through the writings of Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772). Its central office is located in the Newtonville village of Newton, Massachusetts, and it operates through a congregational structure of local societies organized into regional associations that send delegates to an annual convention. The denomination is a member of the National Council of Churches USA and reported approximately 1,800 members as of 2003, down from about 5,440 in 1925. Notable historical adherents include Johnny Appleseed and Helen Keller.
