The United Methodist Church is a mainline Protestant denomination formed in 1968 by the merger of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church. It states that it has never had one central headquarters or single executive leader; its General Council on Finance and Administration, the churchwide finance and legal agency, maintains offices in Nashville, Tennessee. The denomination is governed through a system of annual, jurisdictional, central, and general conferences.
