Three Schools of Islamic Law Say the Same Thing About Circumcision
Three schools of Islamic law hold a variant, differently accounted stance toward khitan, circumcision, in this atlas: the Hanbali, Jafari and Shafii schools. Reading each school's own note finds no variation in substance at all, only in which school is speaking.
One Position, Stated Three Times
Hanbali School's own note: circumcision is an obligation in Hanbali law rather than a recommended custom. Jafari School's own note: circumcision is an obligation in Jafari law rather than a recommended custom. Shafii School's own note: circumcision is an obligation in Shafii law rather than a recommended custom. Two Sunni schools and one Twelver school, drawn from two different branches of Islamic law, and one finding, worded identically three times rather than three independent positions. This atlas does not carry a rival account from a school reading khitan as merely recommended, so this essay states only what it holds: three schools that agree, not a wider survey of Islamic legal opinion on the practice.
