Materialization, the claim that a full physical spirit form appears at a seance, carries three contested facts, all about its single most investigated case, the English medium Florence Cook. Read individually, all three survive as genuinely different kinds of doubt rather than reducing to one.

A Sitter Catches the Medium, Before the Scientist Even Arrives

notable-exposure is a specific, dated incident: "At a December 1873 seance, sitter William Volckman seized the materialized 'Katie King' and found her build indistinguishable from medium Florence Cook's own." Its own description places this BEFORE chemist William Crookes's formal investigation of Cook even began in 1874, "whose published account described extensive testing he believed ruled out fraud." Crookes went on to defend the phenomena despite an exposure that had already happened on the record.

A Later Doubt About the Scientist, Not the Medium

principal-critic is a different kind of doubt again, aimed at the investigator rather than at Cook: "A 1964 Society for Psychical Research report and later historians questioned whether Crookes's personal closeness to Florence Cook compromised the rigor of his investigation." This is not the Volckman incident restated; it is a much later, historiographical question about whether the man who was supposed to be testing the claim could see it clearly.

The General Verdict, Unconditioned on Either Case

replication-status states the field's own summary independent of Cook specifically: "No materialization claim has been produced under conditions combining full physical restraint of the medium, full room search, and independent identification of the figure sufficient to rule out impersonation." A sitter's catch, a historian's doubt about the scientist, and the field's own rule: three facts because they are three different reasons materialization has never been established, not one reason counted three times.
