The Roman Catholic Diocese of Norwich filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on 15 July 2021 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Connecticut, facing more than 140 additional claims from alleged victims of sexual abuse by diocesan priests and employees beyond roughly 60 lawsuits already pending. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge James J. Tancredi confirmed the Norwich Roman Catholic Diocesan Corporation's Joint Plan of Reorganization on 21 May 2025, in a hearing at the federal courthouse in Hartford. The confirmed plan establishes an approximately 31 million dollar settlement fund drawn from diocesan assets and property sales, non-debtor assets, insurance contributions and other sources, with the survivors' committee estimating an average recovery near 310,000 dollars per claimant. Virtually all voting survivors approved the plan and executed releases.

Facts
Documented Findings
Victim Estimate
140 3
Reported as more than 140 additional claims filed during the bankruptcy beyond roughly 60 lawsuits already pending before the filing; neither source states a single final total of claimants covered by the confirmed fund, so the pre-filing and in-process figures are both recorded rather than one being invented.
Key Finding
Norwich's settlement is the smallest by total dollar figure among the diocesan Chapter 11 outcomes verified in this pass, and its funding leaned more heavily on diocesan asset and property sales relative to insurance money than the larger New York and New Jersey settlements did. 1
