The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, New York, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October 2020 after New York's Child Victims Act reopened claims that had previously been time barred. On 4 December 2024, Chief Judge Martin Glenn of the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York confirmed the diocese's reorganization plan, settling claims from more than 600 survivors of alleged sexual abuse for a total of just over 323 million dollars, funded by 234.8 million dollars from the diocese and its parishes, just over 85 million dollars from insurers, and 3 million dollars in creditors' committee counsel contribution. It was the largest diocesan abuse settlement in New York State and, at the time, the largest bankruptcy settlement of its kind nationwide.

Key Finding
Chief Judge Martin Glenn confirmed the diocese's Chapter 11 reorganization plan on 4 December 2024, four years after the October 2020 filing. The plan settles claims from more than 600 survivors for just over 323 million dollars: 234.8 million dollars from the diocese and its parishes, just over 85 million dollars from insurers, and 3 million dollars from the creditors' committee counsel. Survivors had rejected an earlier 200 million dollar diocesan offer in April 2024 as inadequate and lacking child protection measures before the final figure was reached. 2
