The first interim report of the independent Reappraisal Commission for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Trier, chaired by former Rhineland-Palatinate Justice Minister Gerhard Robbers, presented 25 August 2022. The commission, launched June 2021, identified 513 victims (162 female, 311 male, 40 unrecorded) and 195 accused or convicted perpetrators across 1946 to 2021, up from an earlier 2018 study's 442 victims and 148 suspects. It found the diocese repeatedly transferred accused or convicted priests to new assignments inside and outside the diocese, where some went on to reoffend, and that in many cases no protective measures were taken. Bishop Stephan Ackermann, the sitting diocesan bishop, publicly questioned the commission's independence rather than accepting its findings.
