The Great Year, also called the Platonic Year or the precessional cycle, is the roughly 25,772-year period in which the wobble of Earth's axis carries the point of the spring equinox backward through the twelve constellations of the zodiac. Each constellation's span, close to 2,150 years, is popularly called a zodiacal or precessional age, and the transition from one to the next, rather than any fixed calendar date, is what writers mean by the dawning of a new age.

Discovery and the Astronomy of Precession
Axial precession, the slow conical wobble of Earth's rotation axis, was identified by the Greek astronomer Hipparchus of Rhodes around 127 BCE, who compared his own measurements of stellar positions against earlier observations, chiefly those of Timocharis a century and a half before him, and found that the equinox and solstice points had shifted against the fixed stars. He estimated the rate at roughly one degree per century; the modern figure, refined by centuries of subsequent observation, is closer to one degree every seventy two years, giving a full cycle of approximately 25,772 years. James Evans's history of ancient astronomy places this discovery among the genuine technical achievements of Hellenistic science, made without a heliocentric model and well before the physical cause, the gravitational pull of the sun and moon on Earth's equatorial bulge, was understood.
The term Great Year itself is older than Hipparchus's discovery: Plato's Timaeus speaks of a "perfect year" in which all the heavenly bodies return to their original relative positions, a concept rooted in observed planetary cycles rather than in precession specifically, since Plato wrote roughly two and a half centuries before Hipparchus measured the effect. Later astrological and esoteric writers have frequently folded Plato's perfect year and Hipparchus's precessional cycle into a single idea, and the two are commonly treated as equivalent in the ages literature discussed below, even though only the latter was ever an empirical astronomical measurement.
From Astronomy to Ages
Nothing in Hipparchus's own work assigns cultural or religious meaning to the twelve roughly 2,150 year segments that the equinox point traces through the zodiac constellations as it precesses; that step belongs to a much later astrological literature, gathering force especially from the nineteenth century onward, that reads each segment as a distinct "age" governed by the character of its ruling sign. Nicholas Campion's History of Western Astrology traces how the idea of the Great Year as a framework for world history, already present in classical and Hellenistic sources in a more general sense, was progressively reinterpreted through the zodiacal ages scheme familiar today, culminating in the widespread twentieth century association of the coming Age of Aquarius with cultural transformation.
Because the twelve zodiac constellations are not evenly sized in the sky, dividing the roughly 25,772 year cycle into twelve equal 2,150 year segments is itself a simplifying convention rather than an observational fact, and different writers who instead try to match segments to the constellations' true boundaries arrive at different age lengths and different transition dates. This pass seeded only the four tropical-sign ages with genuine independent literature discussing them individually (Taurus, Aries, Pisces and Aquarius), plus the Great Year concept row that frames the whole twelve-part cycle.
