The athanor is a self-feeding furnace built to hold one gentle, unattended heat for days or weeks at a stretch, the opposite of a furnace built for a quick, intense blast. Its name comes from Arabic al-tannur, "the oven," the same root that gives English "tandoor," and the word entered European alchemical Latin through the twelfth-century translation movement that carried Arabic scientific texts into Latin. Built of brick or clay in a tower shape with a domed top, it was packed with slow-burning fuel, often charcoal banked to smother rather than flame, which is why Latin writers also called it the piger Henricus, "Slow Henry." The athanor had no single operation it served; it was the furnace under whatever vessel, whether a philosophical egg, a matrass, or a bain-marie, needed constant heat for the long, patient stages of the work rather than a sudden violent one.

How the Athanor Works
An athanor is not shaped like a furnace built for high heat; it is shaped to make low heat last. The design is a tower with a domed or vaulted top, built of thick brick or fired clay that holds heat well and releases it slowly, with a small fuel chamber near the base and a shelf or cradle above where the working vessel, whatever it happened to be, sat away from direct flame. The fuel itself was chosen and packed for slowness rather than power: charcoal banked densely and starved of excess air smolders rather than burns freely, and a well-packed athanor could hold a steady, low heat for a day or more on a single loading, needing only occasional tending rather than constant feeding.
Some designs used a small reservoir that fed fuel down into the fire chamber gradually as the lower fuel was consumed, which is the literal sense of "self-feeding" the furnace is often described by. Because the vessel sat above rather than in the fire, and because the thick masonry walls evened out whatever small fluctuations the fire produced, the athanor could sustain the kind of unattended, weeks-long, low and steady warmth that a direct flame under an open pot never could, which is precisely what the slow stages of the work, digestion and fermentation above all, were understood to require.

The athanor's name traces directly to Arabic al-tannur, "the oven," the same word that gives English "tandoor" today, and it entered European alchemical vocabulary through the Latin translations of Arabic scientific and alchemical texts produced from the twelfth century onward, especially the Toledo translation movement. Latin writers gave it a second, more affectionate name, piger Henricus, "Slow Henry," precisely because a well-built athanor, once loaded, would keep a low fire smoldering for a long stretch with little attention, in contrast to a furnace that needed constant stoking.
Because the athanor's whole purpose was sustaining one steady temperature rather than performing any single named operation, it appears throughout medieval and early modern alchemical illustration as the generic furnace standing behind whatever vessel is doing the actual work of the page, the philosophical egg most famously among them. It did not survive into the modern laboratory or industry under its own name or shape; direct-fired, thermostatically controlled ovens and kilns took over the job of holding a long, steady, unattended heat, using electricity or gas rather than banked charcoal, but the underlying need the athanor answered, a heat source that will hold its temperature for hours without a human standing over it, is exactly what a modern kiln controller or oven thermostat is built to do.
