Aethiops Mineral is the dull black powder made by grinding metallic mercury together with sulfur until the two combine directly, a compound chemically identical to red cinnabar and vermilion, mercuric sulfide, but in a different, black crystalline form produced by a genuinely different route. Its name, from the old word for the darkest black, marked it out clearly from its bright red chemical twin, and the two forms were studied and used somewhat separately despite sharing an underlying formula that pre-modern chymists could not have confirmed but plainly suspected given how directly one was made from the other's supposed constituent elements.
