Arsenic is the brittle, grey, metallic-looking element that alchemists could obtain by roasting and reducing orpiment or realgar, though what most people in the pre-modern period meant by the plain word arsenic was almost always the white, odorless, extremely toxic oxide, not this metal itself. Its reputation as the poison of choice for centuries of European history, real and legendary alike, rests specifically on that white oxide form, easily disguised in food or drink and, before modern forensic chemistry, essentially undetectable after the fact. Alchemists also studied elemental arsenic itself for its unusual, semi-metallic properties, midway between a true metal and a non-metal. In modern chemistry the element is simply arsenic, and the notorious poison of history is specifically its trioxide, a genuinely important distinction the historical sources do not always make clearly.

The development of the Marsh test in 1836, a specific and sensitive chemical assay for arsenic that could detect the poison in a victim's remains long after death, is widely credited with transforming arsenic poisoning from an almost undetectable crime into a forensically provable one, a landmark moment where analytical chemistry directly reshaped both criminal law and the practical history of a substance long used precisely because it could not be caught. Arsenic's toxicity was also long known to be dose dependent in a way that made it genuinely useful, if dangerous, in the small quantities physicians prescribed, a therapeutic window modern medicine still exploits with more tightly controlled arsenic compounds for a small number of specific conditions today.
