Iron was smelted from ores including hematite, magnetite and, less directly, weathered pyrite, in furnaces that grew steadily more sophisticated across the ancient and medieval world, from simple bloomeries producing a spongy, workable iron mass to blast furnaces capable of producing liquid, cast iron at greater scale from the medieval period onward. Iron's hardness and, once carbon was deliberately or accidentally alloyed into it as steel, its edge-holding capacity made it indispensable for tools and weapons in a way none of the other six classical metals could match, a practical dominance that gave the whole historical period following its widespread adoption the name Iron Age. Exposed to air and moisture, iron corrodes readily, forming the familiar reddish-brown rust, and its slow natural weathering into iron sulfate is exactly the process, observed at pyrite deposits and old iron workings alike, that yields green vitriol, the substance covered separately in this atlas as one of iron's own alchemical salts.
Alchemically, iron's hardness, its aggressive reactivity, and its overwhelming association with weapons and warfare made the Mars correspondence feel almost self evidently apt to writers across the tradition, and iron ranked among the more base, imperfect metals in the standard hierarchy that ran from lead's dense heaviness up toward gold's perfected stability, its ready rusting read as clear, visible evidence of an imperfect, unfinished chemical state compared to gold's total resistance to corrosion.
