Litharge is the yellow to orange, crystalline oxide of lead formed whenever molten lead or lead alloys are roasted in open air, a byproduct of cupellation, the silver refining process, that also became a valuable material in its own right. Roasted further and hotter, litharge turns to minium, the bright red lead oxide used for centuries as both a pigment, the red lead that gave illuminated manuscripts their name miniature, and a paint additive. Alchemists treated the two as closely related stages of the same calcination, the calx of lead in its milder and its more intensely fired forms. In modern chemistry litharge is lead(II) oxide, PbO, and minium is the higher, mixed-valence oxide Pb3O4, two genuinely different compounds related by degree of oxidation.

Making It and Using It
Litharge forms as a natural byproduct of cupellation, the process of refining silver from lead-bearing ore by melting the lead under a blast of air, which oxidizes the lead to litharge while the more chemically noble silver remains behind as a separate metallic bead; the yellow-orange litharge that skims off or crusts the cupel was collected as a useful material rather than discarded, since lead oxide had its own considerable value. Roasted further at a higher, sustained heat, litharge oxidizes still more to become minium, a brilliant red-orange powder distinct enough in color and in composition to be treated, in most craft and alchemical contexts, as its own named substance rather than simply as more thoroughly roasted litharge, even though the alchemical literature is well aware the two are related products of the same basic operation applied with differing intensity.
Minium's brilliant red made it an important pigment from antiquity onward, used in painting and famously in the red initial letters and decorative details of illuminated manuscripts, a practice common enough that the word miniature, for a small illustrated image, derives from minium rather than from any sense of small size. Litharge itself found extensive use as a drying agent mixed into oil paints and varnishes, as a glaze ingredient in ceramics, and as a flux in various metallurgical and glassmaking processes, its usefulness independent of whether it was further processed into minium or used directly.

Litharge and minium are identified as two distinct lead oxide compounds related by the degree of oxidation: litharge is lead(II) oxide, PbO, and minium is lead(II,IV) oxide, more often written Pb3O4, a mixed valence compound containing lead in two different oxidation states within the same crystal structure, a genuine chemical subtlety that pre-modern craftsmen and alchemists could not have described in those terms even though they correctly recognized minium as the product of pushing litharge's own formation reaction further.
There is no real scholarly dispute over either identification, both compounds being well characterized and both still manufactured and used today, litharge chiefly in glass and ceramics and minium as a corrosion-resistant primer paint, though its toxicity has sharply reduced that latter use in recent decades.
