The eleventh house is a post-ascension, succedent, and its Hellenistic name is Agathos Daimon, the Good Spirit. It is the joy of Jupiter in the classical scheme, and counting by whole signs it stands at a sextile to the rising sign, so it is configured to the Horoskopos.
The names of the places run in a pattern that becomes visible once the aversions are marked. The eleventh and the fifth, Good Spirit and Good Fortune, are the sextile and the trine rising above the horizon on the western side; the twelfth and the sixth, Bad Spirit and Bad Fortune, are the two averse cadent places immediately alongside them. Good and bad in this vocabulary track whether a place can see the ascendant, and the eleventh can.
On the cusp, whole-sign gives the eleventh sign from the ascendant; Equal measures 300 degrees; the quadrant systems place it between the Midheaven and the ascendant as one of two intermediate divisions, computed differently in each.
Under whole-sign and equal houses this is one of the two houses in which a floating Midheaven commonly lands, the other being the ninth. A chart with the Midheaven in the eleventh reads the public standing of the native through the house of friends, alliances and hopes, which is a genuinely different picture from the same chart cast in Placidus, and worth flagging when it occurs.
