A Magazine Born the Same Month as the Church It Serves

When the Pentecostal Church, Incorporated and the Pentecostal Assemblies of Jesus Christ merged in 1945 to form the United Pentecostal Church, the new body did not wait to find its voice. That same December, the first issue of the Pentecostal Herald appeared, itself the product of a smaller merger: two earlier papers, The Pentecostal Outlook and The Apostolic Herald, folded into one publication carrying the new church's name into every household it reached.

The Herald kept publishing for seventy years without a break, an unbroken monthly record from December 1945 to December 2015, archived issue by issue today by the Apostolic Archives, Library and Research Center as a primary record of the church's own development. In 2018 the magazine took a new name, Pentecostal Life, a change in title rather than in ownership: it remains published by the church's own Pentecostal Publishing House, still carrying doctrinal teaching, ministerial news and pastoral material to UPCI's ministers and congregations.

Pentecostal Publishing House describes its own bound archive of the early decades as "a significant resource that helps define Oneness Pentecostalism," and that description is fair to what the magazine has always been: not outside commentary on the United Pentecostal Church International, but the denomination's own account of itself, written in its own words, issue after issue, for as long as the church has existed.
