A Network the Church Does Not Own

By 2000, less than sixteen years after Danny Shelton's sleepless night in West Frankfort, 3ABN had grown from a single satellite feed into a network with worldwide satellite coverage, having expanded into Russia in 1992 as the Soviet Union's collapse opened new territory to independent religious broadcasters. Today 3ABN broadcasts in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and French, reaching viewers across eight satellites, more than 500 cable systems and more than 200 radio affiliates, alongside streaming and mobile apps that carry it to every inhabited continent.

None of that growth changed the network's ownership structure. 3ABN has never been a General Conference property, and it says so itself: it is "not owned or operated by any person or outside organization, and neither are we funded by any church or denomination." That puts it in a genuinely different institutional category from Hope Channel, the Adventist Church's own official broadcast subsidiary, even though both networks air recognizably Adventist doctrine and both draw heavily on Adventist staff, volunteers and audiences.

The distinction is not a technicality. An independent network answers to its own board and its own donors rather than to a denominational hierarchy, which shapes everything from programming decisions to how the network has weathered its own internal controversies over four decades of growth. Viewers who encounter 3ABN and Hope Channel side by side are watching two different kinds of institution tell a closely related religious story: one built and run by the church itself, the other built by two people with no broadcasting background who felt they had been given a message to carry.
