A President Wept at a Louisiana Congregation's Own Easter Pageant

Every spring from 1983 to 2004, the Pentecostals of Alexandria, a United Pentecostal Church International congregation in central Louisiana, staged Messiah, its own telling of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, performed entirely by its own members. At its peak in the mid-1990s the production needed around 600 volunteers and offered roughly 30,000 tickets across its run each season, tickets that typically sold out within three days.

On April 8, 2000, one of those performances had an audience member most Easter pageants never draw: the sitting President of the United States. Bill Clinton had known the church's pastor, Anthony Mangun, and his wife Mickey Mangun for more than twenty years by then, and after the performance he spoke without a prepared text. The Clinton White House itself preserved a transcript of what he said, an official government record rather than a press account. Clinton described the decades of friendship, recalled a moment when the Manguns had traveled to Washington to personally reassure him during one of his presidency's hardest stretches, and became visibly moved, later remarking he had cried through more of that night's performance than anyone else present.

The pageant was never built for that kind of attention. It was built the way most congregational Easter productions are, by a church staging its own central story for its own community, year after year, with its own people playing every part. What makes it worth recording is not that a president once sat in the audience, but that the audience did not change what was on stage. The same volunteers who filled 30,000 seats a season for two decades were still the ones telling the story the night a president happened to be watching.
