A Kingdom Human Language Cannot Draw a Map Of

Baha'i teaching is deliberately reluctant to describe the Abha Kingdom in the concrete, geographic terms that other traditions sometimes use for paradise. Baha'u'llah and Abdu'l-Baha, his son and appointed successor, both wrote that human language and human minds, shaped entirely by a physical world, are simply not equipped to describe a wholly spiritual realm accurately, so that any image of gardens, thrones or rivers found in older scriptures should be read as an accommodation to human understanding rather than as a literal description of conditions in the next world. This is offered as a matter of principle rather than as a modern reinterpretation: Baha'i writings treat spiritual truth generally as something progressively revealed in terms each age can absorb, and the afterlife is one place they apply that principle explicitly.

What the tradition insists on more literally is the trajectory rather than the scenery: that the soul survives, that its condition after death correlates with the character and service built up during life, and that its nearness to God has no final stopping point, continuing to increase through what Baha'i writings describe as countless divine worlds beyond this one. That emphasis on open-ended progress rather than a fixed reward or punishment is one of the clearer doctrinal differences between the Baha'i afterlife and the more architecturally described heavens and hells of several older Abrahamic traditions it otherwise shares much of its moral vocabulary with.
