The Third Ray: Active Intelligence

The Third Ray, of Active Intelligence or Adaptability, is in the Theosophical system of Alice Bailey the ray of the philosopher, the planner and the strategist, the energy of intelligent activity, of thought put to work in the world, associated with abstract mind, adaptability and the manipulation of matter and circumstance. It is linked in that system to the planet Saturn and to the colour yellow or green, and its quality is the creative intelligence that weaves purpose into form, its shadow the over-busy mind lost in scheming and detail. The first three rays, Will, Love-Wisdom and Active Intelligence, are called the rays of aspect, the primary trinity, and the remaining four the rays of attribute derived from them. The doctrine is modern, from Blavatsky in 1888 and Bailey from 1936; its structure of three major and four minor rays echoes older triadic and sevenfold patterns but is itself a twentieth-century esoteric formulation.
