African Studies: Reading a Tradition on the Continent's Own Terms

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

African Studies is the interdisciplinary study of the societies, languages, history and cultures of Africa on their own terms, its method combining history, anthropology, linguistics and area specific fieldwork rather than treating the continent as an appendix to another region's story. The field gained an academic home in 1948, when Melville Herskovits founded the first dedicated African Studies program at Northwestern University, establishing sustained scholarly attention to Africa as a subject in its own right rather than as a footnote to colonial or missionary history.

For an atlas of religion and belief, African Studies underlies the regional study of specific African religious traditions this atlas records, from indigenous belief systems to the African forms Christianity and Islam took as they spread across the continent. Its combination of history, anthropology and fieldwork lets a tradition's origins, its living practice and its relationship to the societies that hold it be read on the continent's own terms rather than filtered through an outside observer's assumptions.

That grounding is why the field matters here specifically. A religious tradition native to Africa, or an African form of a wider tradition, is described more accurately when African Studies supplies the historical and social context a general account of religion alone would not carry.
