For roughly fourteen centuries, the Almagest's Earth-centered universe was not one theological option among several; it was simply what an educated person understood the physical cosmos to be, and Jewish, Christian and Islamic thinkers alike built their theology on top of it rather than around it. Dante's nested heavens in the Paradiso follow Ptolemaic structure directly, medieval Christian cosmology placed the unmoving Earth at the created center of a divinely ordered universe, and Islamic astronomers, even while refining and in places quietly correcting Ptolemy's mathematics, worked within the same geocentric frame for their own calendrical and religious purposes, including the timing of prayer and the direction of Mecca.
That long theological entanglement is part of why the Almagest's eventual displacement mattered so far beyond astronomy. Nicolaus Copernicus proposed a heliocentric alternative in 1543, Johannes Kepler refined planetary orbits into ellipses in the early seventeenth century, and Galileo Galilei's telescopic observations supplied direct evidence against a strictly Ptolemaic sky, together dismantling a physical model that centuries of religious cosmology had assumed as settled fact. The resulting controversy, especially around Galileo, was not primarily a dispute about astronomy for its own sake; it was a dispute about whether a physical description embedded that deeply in theology could be revised at all.
The Almagest's star catalog, stripped of its cosmology, kept practical use in navigation and observational astronomy well after its physical model was abandoned.
