An Archivist's Decades of Footage Become a Documentary

The Source Family, released in 2012 and directed by Jodi Wille and Maria Demopoulos, premiered in competition at South by Southwest before playing further festivals and reaching sixty American cities in a limited 2013 theatrical run. Its raw material came almost entirely from inside the group: Isis Aquarian, the commune's self appointed archivist during its Los Angeles years, had kept photographs, diary pages, home movies, and cassette recordings of Father Yod's morning talks for decades after the community dissolved, and that private archive became the film's spine, layered with new interviews of former members recalling both the commune's appeal and its harder edges.

Reviewers were generally won over by the access even where they questioned the community it depicted. Matt Goldberg, writing for Collider, called it a fascinating sociological study that paints a rich portrait of the group's dynamic, and Stephen Saito, covering the South by Southwest premiere for Moveable Fest, described lines wrapping around the venue and a film more interested in former members' personal reckonings with Father Yod than in explaining his appeal to outsiders. Neither review found the film reproducing devotional material, only its subjects looking back on having lived inside it.
