Making a Tablet, and Retiring One

A spirit tablet is not simply inscribed and left in place indefinitely; its creation and its eventual retirement both follow conventions that reveal how the practice understands the relationship between the living and a specific ancestor rather than ancestors in general. A new tablet is typically inscribed by a ritual specialist or a senior family member following a fixed form naming the deceased, their titles or position, and their relationship to the family, and in many communities the tablet is ritually dotted or animated in a consecration act before it is treated as a seat the ancestor's spirit actually occupies, a step that marks the difference between a piece of inscribed wood and a live object of veneration in much the way consecration transforms an image into a murti in Hindu practice.

Confucian ritual texts and the family conventions built on them generally hold that direct, individual veneration of a specific ancestor by name is owed for a limited number of generations, commonly four, after which continued remembrance shifts to the ancestor as part of the lineage collectively rather than as an individually addressed presence, and at that point the personal tablet is customarily retired, sometimes ritually burned, and the ancestor's name absorbed into a genealogical record or a collective lineage tablet instead. This finite horizon distinguishes tablet veneration from open-ended ancestor worship in the abstract: the practice is built around a defined period of close, personal attention to a named individual that is understood to taper and eventually end, precisely because ancestors further removed in time are venerated differently, as lineage rather than as still-present persons.
