Arvo Part has described his tintinnabuli technique, the self invented minimalist style built from simple triads with which he re-emerged in 1976, as drawing on the sound world of Gregorian chant and Russian Orthodox liturgical music. The technique took shape during the same years that followed his 1972 conversion to Orthodox Christianity, and Part's own account ties its sound directly to the liturgical traditions of the church he had entered rather than treating the connection as incidental.
Tabula Rasa, composed in 1977, and Spiegel im Spiegel, composed in 1978, are among the best known early works written in the tintinnabuli style, appearing within two years of the technique's public re-emergence and giving listeners their first widely heard examples of the sound Part had developed out of his study of chant and Orthodox liturgical music.
Since the 2010s, Part has been repeatedly cited as the most performed living composer in the world, a reception built substantially on tintinnabuli works whose own sound Part traces to Gregorian chant and Russian Orthodox liturgy rather than to the twelve tone and collage techniques of his earlier, pre ban career, a documented case of a composer's religious conversion reshaping the technique that became his most widely heard body of work.
