An Arabic Tablet Before a Latin Phrase, and the Gap Between Two Corpora

The formula's own text history runs through Arabic before it reaches the Latin phrase everyone now quotes. The Emerald Tablet survives first embedded within Arabic alchemical writing, attributed there to figures including Balinus, centuries after the Greek Hermetica the tablet is often grouped with had already been written. It reached Latin Europe considerably later still, through translations made in the twelfth century, and it was this Latin version, not the Greek philosophical dialogues that make up the Corpus Hermeticum proper, that carried the phrase into the alchemical and magical literature of medieval and early modern Europe.

Treating the Emerald Tablet and the Greek Hermetica as one undifferentiated body of ancient wisdom, which much popular writing on Hermeticism still does, obscures a real textual gap of centuries and a real change of language and genre between them. The Greek Hermetica are philosophical and religious dialogues; the Emerald Tablet is a compressed alchemical formula whose own transmission history runs through a different civilization's scholarship before it becomes part of the European Hermetic tradition at all. The phrase became inseparable from Hermeticism's public identity regardless of that gap, a fact about its later reception rather than about its origin.
