The Astrological spread is unusual among tarot layouts in that its positions were not devised for tarot at all. They were taken over ready-made.
The twelve houses
The twelve positions are the twelve astrological houses, a division of the chart into topics of life that is far older than any tarot pack and belongs to a different discipline entirely. The first house of self and identity, the seventh of partnership, the tenth of career and the twelfth of the hidden are astrological categories, and a reader laying this spread is using an astrologer's topic list with cards in place of planets.
Provenance
The borrowing belongs to the occult revival of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, in which tarot and astrology were systematically cross-mapped by the same writers and orders. No single first publication of this layout can be identified, and the atlas records the authorship as unknown while recording the borrowing itself, which is not in doubt.
What the borrowing does and does not carry over
The house topics come across intact. What does not come across is the reason a chart assigns a particular planet to a particular house, which in astrology is a calculation from a time and a place. In the spread the assignment is the shuffle. The two systems share a vocabulary of topics and nothing of their method, and the atlas records the relationship at that level rather than treating the spread as astrology.
