Auraicept na nEces, "the scholars' primer," was written to train the filid, the professional poet-scholars of early medieval Ireland, in the technical grammar of their craft, and it takes ogham, the stroke alphabet already recorded in this atlas, as one of its central subjects. Rather than simply listing the letters, it embeds ogham in a mythic frame: the text credits its invention to Ogma, a god associated with eloquence and skill in language, who is said to have devised the alphabet to demonstrate his own mastery of letters, a founding story that gives the script divine rather than merely practical origins.
Alongside that myth, the text sets out ogham's internal structure with real technical precision. It groups the letters into aicmi, families of five, each named for its first letter, the four core groups this atlas records separately, Beithe, hUatha, Muine and Ailme, with a later fifth group, Forfeda, added to extend the alphabet beyond its original twenty letters. The Auraicept explains this grouping logic, along with a body of grammatical material, on declension, on the parts of speech, on poetic meter, that situates ogham within a wider account of language itself rather than treating it as an isolated curiosity.
That dual character, mythographic origin story bound to genuine grammatical instruction, is what makes the text useful evidence for how medieval Irish scholars themselves understood their own writing system, distinct from what modern epigraphy can independently confirm about ogham's actual origins.
