A Spiritualist Staple, and a Vehicle for Long Literary Works

Automatic writing became a standard spiritualist technique from the 1850s: a medium, often in a light trance or simply relaxed and inattentive, would hold a pen or pencil to paper and allow it to move seemingly of its own accord, producing text attributed to a controlling spirit rather than the medium's own authorship. A closely related dictation practice produced one of the field's most studied literary cases: from July 1913, Pearl Curran of St. Louis began receiving communications, initially spelled out on a Ouija board and later simply dictated aloud in a dissociated state, from an entity she called "Patience Worth," said to be the spirit of a seventeenth-century Englishwoman. Over the following two decades Curran produced four published novels along with a large body of poetry and short fiction under the Patience Worth name, work later scholars have studied both for its literary quality, some of Worth's poetry was selected for a best-of-the-year anthology alongside recognised poets of the day, and as a case study in the productive capacity of dissociated composition more broadly, of which pen-and-paper automatic writing is the classic form.

The Society for Psychical Research's founding generation took automatic writing seriously as a research subject specifically because, unlike a fleeting apparition, it left a durable, examinable physical record, and detailed case study of automatic writing became one of the routes by which psychical research and mainstream experimental psychology, still closely intertwined in the 1880s and 1890s, developed shared theoretical ground.
