Choosing Among Three Daily Prayers

Most traditions with a daily obligatory prayer specify a single fixed text, or a fixed sequence, that every observant adherent recites in the same form. Baha'u'llah's ordinance instead sets out three distinct obligatory prayers, short, medium and long, of which an adult Baha'i must recite exactly one, chosen freely, in any given twenty-four hour period. The choice is genuinely open: a worshipper may recite the short prayer on one day and the long prayer the next, and nothing in Baha'i practice treats one choice as more devout than another in principle, though the three differ considerably in length, physical demand and the number of times they must be repeated across the day.

This structure of choice sits somewhat unusually beside both of the traditions Baha'i devotional practice most visibly echoes. Islamic salat specifies five fixed daily prayers at set times, offering no equivalent choice of alternative forms; Christian daily office traditions that specify multiple prayers across a day generally expect all of them, not a single selection from among several options. The Baha'i system, by contrast, guarantees a floor, one obligatory prayer must be said daily, while leaving the specific form, and therefore the length of time and degree of physical exertion involved, to the individual worshipper's own daily choice, a structure the Baha'i Faith's own writings link to its broader emphasis on individual conscience and personal responsibility in religious observance rather than externally imposed uniformity.
