The Symbols After Jones

Jones treated the 360 symbols as raw material rather than finished doctrine, and he discouraged casual reprinting of Wheeler's original wording, which he felt invited glib misreading divorced from the discipline he taught around it. That restraint did not survive his own students. Dane Rudhyar, who had sat with Jones's circle in the 1920s though not at the Balboa Park session itself, published his own literary reworking of the symbols in An Astrological Mandala in 1973, giving each degree a title and a meditative gloss that reached a far wider audience than Jones's drier original phrasing had.

Later writers, most notably Lynda Hill in the 1990s, returned to Wheeler's recorded words directly and built interpretive systems that tried to stay closer to the plain imagery she had described. The symbols are now folded into ordinary astrological practice well beyond the circle that produced them: a natal or event chart can be read degree by degree against the Sabian set, and software packages generate the citation automatically, so that most people consulting a Sabian symbol today have never read Jones's book and do not know that the whole set traces to one long sitting in a parked car at Balboa Park. The park keeps no marker or memory of the event; the atlas records the site because the working method genuinely happened there, not because the location itself carries any traditional weight.
