Christianized Later, Remembered Longer

Baltic pagan religious traditions, particularly in Lithuania, were among the very last in Europe to formally Christianize, with Lithuania's official conversion not occurring until the late fourteenth century, considerably later than most of the rest of Christian Europe, a comparatively late conversion date that scholars of Baltic religion connect to a correspondingly richer survival of folk religious practice, traditional songs called dainos, and vocabulary with plausible pre-Christian religious content persisting within later Lithuanian and Latvian popular culture, giving modern reconstruction efforts somewhat more folkloric raw material to draw on than exists for some earlier-converted European pagan traditions discussed elsewhere in this atlas.

Historical Baltic paganism honored deities including Perkunas, a thunder god with recognized parallels to other Indo-European sky and storm deities such as Norse Thor and Slavic Perun, within a religious system understood mainly through this later folkloric survival combined with scattered earlier chronicle references rather than through extensive contemporary pre-Christian textual documentation of its own. Latvia followed a broadly similar though not identical religious trajectory to Lithuania, and Latvian folk song and tradition, particularly the daina tradition specific to Latvia, provides a further parallel body of source material that Latvian pagan revival organizations draw on somewhat independently of the specifically Lithuanian Romuva movement.
