A Modern Confessional Marker

Inerrancy is affirmed especially in Baptist, Pentecostal, Seventh-day Adventist, and broadly evangelical circles, where it became a defining test in the modern controversies over the authority of scripture and the challenges of historical and scientific criticism. Other Christians hold scripture authoritative and inspired while distinguishing its saving message from questions of incidental detail, or preferring the term infallible for its trustworthiness in matters of faith. The affirmation thus marks a particular, robust stance on the nature of biblical authority rather than a universal Christian position.

The doctrine became the central battleground of a major internal denominational struggle within the Southern Baptist Convention from the late 1970s through the 1990s, a period participants and historians came to call the conservative resurgence, in which inerrantist leaders won successive presidential elections and used denominational appointive power to require inerrancy of seminary faculty and agency leaders, prompting the departure of many moderate Baptists who had held scripture authoritative without insisting on the stricter inerrantist formula, a conflict that reshaped the largest American Protestant denomination around this single doctrinal line.
