An Unmeasured Toll and a War Fought Through the Parish

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

No historian has produced a reliable death count for either Bishops' War. The First Bishops' War produced no significant battle at all, and the only substantial engagement of either campaign, the Battle of Newburn in August 1640, is recorded only as roughly three hundred combined casualties across both sides, a figure that mixes killed and wounded without separating them and takes no account of deaths from disease in the two large armies mustered in 1639 and 1640, commonly a larger killer than combat in campaigns of this era. This atlas records the toll as unknown rather than adopt that combined figure as a death count.

The wars were organized through religious institutions from their first cause. The National Covenant was an explicitly religious document, binding its signers to defend "the true religion" and reformed worship rather than framed as a political grievance, and Covenanter resistance throughout both wars was organized substantially through parish and presbytery structures rather than through a secular political movement. The wars ended with Charles's religious policy in Scotland defeated outright, its prayer book never imposed, though the underlying dispute over church government was not finally settled for decades.
